Youth unemployment continues to be a big issue in Australia. Nationally, around 12.4% of all young people are unemployed as structural and personal barriers impact the ability for young people to secure work and transition from education to employment.
On top of this, the employment landscape is rapidly evolving; pathways are less linear and the impact of Industry 4.0 means that young people now will be stepping into new jobs that might not exist yet.
Whilst this brings new opportunities it also creates more choice, confusion and challenges for young people. However, one thing is clear, youth need to be more adaptable, resilient and equipped with the right information, skills and work experience for the next wave of change and innovation. So how can we achieve this and re-engage youth on a pathway to meaningful employment?

Baden is a nationally recognised designer of experiential entrepreneurship education programs. He is Director of the Bond Business Commercialisation Centre and leads the entrepreneurship and innovation disciplines in the Bond Business School. He is cofounder of an ag-tech startup (BlockGrain), a niche veterinary business (Pet Wellness Centres) and has a background in commercial banking and private equity.
Department of Education & Training
Dr Lyndal Groom is the Branch Manager, Student Participation Branch in the Improving Student Outcomes Group at the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.
Lyndal’s responsibilities cover policies and programs to support and enhance student outcomes across the span of compulsory education. This covers student wellbeing, Indigenous Strategy and the transition into school and pathways from school to employment and further education and training as well as parent, community and industry engagement in school education.
Robin Kuhne joined Sunraysia TAFE in 2017 as General Manager of Education. Robin has combined an industry base knowledge of employment and training with VET having commenced his working career as a Steel Fabricator via the Apprenticeship pathway. Robin has been the General Manager of a diverse Group Training Organisation that included oversight of 300 Apprentices and Trainees and built an RTO arm in a time of significant change that was the introduction of the demand driven Victorian Training Guarantee initiative.
Robin forms part of a new and dynamic leadership team at Sunraysia TAFE that is leading significant change. In a short space of time this has led to Sunraysia TAFE being ranked number one TAFE in Victoria for Student Employment Outcomes, Employer Recommendation and is recognising 28% growth on enrolments to lead all Victorian based TAFE’s.
