If you’re working in the community sector at the moment, there’s no doubt you’ve heard about Collective Impact. In fact, you’re probably thinking about how you can get your organisation involved. Well before you do, there are 3 things you need to know:
1. It’s not a silver bullet – there are circumstances where it’s the right approach and circumstances where it isn’t
2. It’s just one of a range of collaborative approaches you can take to achieve social change
3. IT’S NOT EASY. In fact it’s complex and complicated!
So why am I telling you all of this? Well its definitely not to talk you out of Collective Impact (although, I admit, it might sound like it!). It’s actually the opposite. My fear is that, with all the hype surrounding it, people will think Collective Impact is a silver bullet: a simple approach to achieving social change. I worry that, when the reality turns out to be quite different, people will abandon it and, even more worse, perhaps move away from collaboration all together.
Collective Impact, like other forms of collaboration, has amazing potential. We just need to make sure we go into it with our eyes open.
