In early 2013 the Cleveland Clinic ran the ‘2013 Patient Experience: Empathy + Innovation Summit’ in Cleveland, Ohio.

In his opening address President and Chief Executive Officer of the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Toby Cosgrove highlighted the importance of having the patient at the centre of care.

“The only reason healthcare organizations exist is because of the patient. We have to not only do the right thing for them, but we have to include empathy and compassion,” said Cosgrove.

The Cleveland Clinic highlights four elements that are key to their ‘Patient First’ initiative;

1.       Safety 2.       Quality

3.       Satisfaction

4.       Value

In an effort to emphasise the importance of empathy in health care, the Cleveland Clinic has released a thought provoking video entitled: Empathy: The Human Connection to Patient Care, which we wanted to share with you.
