A news article recently released from the Bureau of Health Information  looked at the latest snapshot that some NSW hospitals are still not meeting its targets for emergency waiting times, while the state’s public hospitals shows improvements. What’s even more challenging for hospitals is to develop an effective strategy for balancing NEAT and NEST. Especially as the 2015 deadline drawing closer, hospitals will need to refocus on achieving a balance between hospital targets and NSW hospitals maintaining a high level of care. From a case study we recently came across, some of the obvious challenges hospitals are facing include:

  • Lack of sustained and visible support from senior management and clinical leaders
  • Inadequate resources allocated for change implementation
  • Failure to develop robust measurement and data feedback systems
  • Resistance to change from professional and/or organisational culture

What are the challenges you are currently facing? At NEAT & NEST,  we will feature success stories and strategies from 10 innovative hospitals on how they:

  • Implement a sustainable delineation model to optimise elective
  • Create a clear and standardised admission patient pathways
  • Create an attitude shift in staff towards the targets as models for better care
  • Implement clinical and process redesign to streamline the patient journey

Achieving the targets whilst maintaining a high level of quality will require commitment right across the health and hospital system. Hospital executives will need to work in partnership with clinicians to achieve sustainable change.
