Yesterday Prime Minister Tony Abbott delivered this year’s Closing the Gap report, outlining how the nation failing to meet “more meaningful targets” in Indigenous disadvantage.
“And Indigenous employment, I deeply regret to say, has, if anything, slipped backwards over the past few years,” says Mr Abbott.
The Indigenous Jobs and Training Review enters it’s final stage before reporting its findings in April, there has never been such a strong spotlight on Indigenous employment issues.
The review received over 300 public submissions from a collection of organisations across Australia. A number of sectors have contributed to the Review, including; the resources and banking sectors, as well as Government and community organisations.
According to Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, Alan Tudge, since 2008 the Indigenous employment gap has grown by almost three per cent. “It’s not training with the possibility that you might get a job at the end, and possibly not, but rather training where there is a guaranteed job at the end. Because too often particularly in Indigenous communities you find people just doing training after training after training. And I’ve met people with ten certificates to their name and still no job at the end of it, so we’ve got to break that cycle and have much more demand-driven training, rather than supply-driven training,” Mr Tudge recently told the SBS. The Review has set out to find out;
- What can be done differently?
- What is currently working?
- Which organisations are trying something innovative?
While organisations receiving Federal Government funding and support are awaiting the Review findings to be release, many are questioning what changes the next 12 months might bring for currently funded projects, namely the Remote Jobs and Communities Program (RJCP). ‘People are optimistic that the Review will strengthen the Remote Jobs and Communities Program, more than anything else,’ Shane Edwards, JSA/RJCP Consultant at Murdi Paaki Regional Enterprise Corporation told us this month.
