With a startling 1193 deaths on Australian Roads in 2013 and a total of 191 as at 28th February 2014, it is clear to see that Australia has a problem. As governments try and point the finger at the weather conditions, it is sometimes the drivers and the actual condition of the road that get off lightly. The sad thing is these figures often get swept under the table and have somewhat become a norm in society. How do you feel about this? Does 1193 deaths make your stomach churn like it does mine?

The World Health Organization has released 10 disturbing facts that all Australians should know about global road safety.

–        More than 1.2 million people die in road traffic crashes every year

–        As many as 50 million people are injured or disabled by road traffic crashes every year

–        Half of all crash victims are vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists

–        Road traffic crashes cost countries up to %4 of their Gross National Product (That’s a whopping 14819 Million just for the fourth quarter of 2014)

–        A correctly used seat-belt reduces the risk of death in a crash by %61

–        Mandatory use of child restraints can reduce child deaths by %35

–        Helmets reduce fatal and serious head injuries by up to %45

–        If a global drink driving law was fully enforced then alcohol-related crashes would reduce by %20

–        For every 1km/h reduction in the average speed, there is a %2 reduction in the number of crashes

–        Simple low-cost engineering measures such as speed bumps and corner mirrors are saving thousands of lives annually

With any problem, identifying that there is a problem is the first step. One of the ways in which the government is trying to decrease these tolls is by increasing the sustainability of the actual roads. Here’s 4 Top Tips for local councils to drive sustainability in their road maintenance.

What are your thoughts on road safety? How can we get these 1000+ annual deaths decreased?
