Early last year, the Higher Education Standards Panel (HESP) was requested by the Minister to consider how higher education student admissions policies could be more transparent, without increasing regulation.

By November 2016 HESP had made 14 recommendations, suggesting that providers need to use accurate descriptions of ATAR thresholds and other admission requirements, and publish information on admissions processes.

Government accepted all 14 recommendations, with as many as possible to be implemented by the 2018 academic year. To assist with this, the Admissions Transparency Implementation Working Group (IWG) has been established, tasked with developing an implementation plan.

The implementation plan is to be developed in partnership with the sector, to avoid the need for introducing additional regulation.
