Embedding a change culture in your aged care facility

“You’re building a culture of innovation is freedom” – Jennifer Stuart Smith, Chief Executive Officer, James Milson Village

As aged care providers continue to digest the Interim Report of the Royal Commission and await the changes the final report will bring, the time to develop a culture of change and innovation is now.

Jennifer Stuart Smith, Chief Executive Officer of James Milson Village, says it’s about bringing all levels of your organisation on the journey. 

“At the starting point, look at what you do and ask a lot of questions. Talk to all the people around you at all varying levels. All the people who are savvy and wanting change to those people who are quite fearful of change.”

Organisations should analyse the information presented and be critical of current practices and processes. 

“That’s when you start asking the why,” Ms Smith says. “And when you start asking the why, you’re actually formulating a story.

“Because people will come on a journey with you if you tell them the why, the what, the how, and actually invest in them time to discover and let them discover along the way, their what and why and how and look at their outcomes. Generally their outcomes will fit not far from the outcomes of the program.”

Technology and automation has raised concern from the workers of many aged care providers, primarily in the perceived threat to their employment. 

Ms Smith believes communication is paramount in addressing the fears around ‘what’s going to happen to my job? How will it affect me?’

When James Milson Village sat down with their staff to talk about their model of care and one of the main points of feedback was the time documentation and other administrative processes took. This was time that could be better used at the bedside and delivering an exceptional quality of care. 

When automative technology was brought in to alleviate administrative burden, the message was clear: this was now time they could spend delivering human-centred care- something machinery is simply unable to.

“You’re building a culture of innovation is freedom,” Ms Smith says.
