In her role, Karen provides a range of support to the Minister for Industry, Innovation & Science, the Hon Christopher Pyne.


Karen comes to the position with a history of being a strong advocate for the Australian scientific community. An Engineer by profession, Karen co-founded of the Parliamentary Friends of Science group in order to promote closer engagement between the scientific community and political representatives.
She has always been passionate about encouraging the study of maths and science in schools and promoting science, technology, engineering and mathematics professions. As a member of the Women in Engineering Alumni Network at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), she promotes study in these crucial fields.

Geoff Prince has been the Director of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) since 2009. With 34 members drawn from universities, government agencies and learned societies, AMSI is the principal national voice for the mathematical sciences discipline. Its programs cover research and higher education, school education and industrial and commercial engagement. AMSI is recognised by government and industry as a leading provider of policy advice, services, programs and strategic initiatives.


Geoff has a long academic career as a teacher and researcher at RMIT, the University of New England and La Trobe University where he was Head of Department. He works in differential geometry, differential equations and their application.

Sally-Ann Williams

Sally-Ann Williams is the Engineering Community & Outreach Manager for Google Australia.


She is responsible for a broad portfolio of programs including leading Google’s efforts in CS and STEM education & outreach (K-12), research collaborations with universities and entrepreneurship and startup engagement.


In her role leading Google’s CS/STEM education engagement she manages over 35 partnerships & programs designed to inspire students, equip teachers, and connect the community to the possibilities careers in CS can lead to.   Most recently this work has included national implementation strategies to support ACARA’s Digital Technology curriculum and help position Australia as a nation of innovators.
Prior to joining Google 8 years ago, Sally-Ann worked at several Australian tertiary institutions in a range of academic and academic administration roles spanning executive education, public sector management, research and postgraduate degrees and tertiary management.  A life long learner she holds an undergraduate and research masters degree and several other postgraduate qualifications.

Dr Roslyn Prinsley

Dr Roslyn Prinsley was appointed in February 2013 as the National Adviser for Science and Mathematics Education and Industry in the Office of the Chief Scientist.


In this role, Roslyn advises the Chief Scientist on the role of science, technology, engineering, mathematics across education and industry.


Roslyn is Chair of the Office’s Industry Working Group and Women in STEM National Committee.


Roslyn was previously a Principal Strategic Consultant with Sinclair Knight Merz. Prior to this role, she held a number of senior positions at the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC). Most recently she was General Manager, New and Emerging Industries. Roslyn was also Chair of Bioenergy Australia, an alliance of 80 businesses, research, government, and industry organisations. She also chaired National Steering Committees for two national research and development plans – New and Emerging Industries and Bioenergy and Biofuels – under the auspices of the Primary Industries Ministerial Council, and initiated and established a new organisation – New Rural Industries Australia.


She was manager of the Agricultural Sciences Program for the Commonwealth Science Adviser to the Commonwealth Secretary General in the UK.


Roslyn holds a Bachelor of Science, a Diploma of Education (Science), a PhD in photosynthesis, and a Masters in Intellectual Property Law and is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors. She also worked as a science and mathematics teacher early in her career. She has published over 70 books and reports and is a member of the Plant Breeder’s Rights Advisory Committee to the Minister of Industry.

Closer engagement with industry benefits universities, businesses and students by providing them with vital job skills necessary for employment. However, a paper by ACER found only 1 in 7 undergraduate students in the natural and physical sciences participates in industry programs.

This conference will provide workable methods to increase STEM course participation and build relationships with STEM employers to improve graduates workplace skills.
