Violence and aggression towards healthcare staff is unacceptable, but significantly under-reported. Responses are often conducted in silos, with little coordination across departments and agencies, putting staff at greater risk. Consistently being exposed to incidents of occupational violence and aggression have a negative impact on staff mental health and well being and overall hospital safety.
The Improving Safety & Security conference will address the need for a change in culture, to better foster collaborative approaches, sharing and improving existing proactive and reactive strategies and safeguarding the mental health and well-being of all hospital staff.

Brett Holmes is the General Secretary of the NSW Nurses and Midwives’ Association and Branch Secretary of the ANMF NSW Branch – representing the industrial and professional interests of 63,000 nurses, midwives and assistants in nursing in NSW. Brett is a graduate of the Harvard Trade Union Program and a qualified nursing professional. Brett has been NSWNMA General Secretary since 2002 and sits on a number of boards, including: ACTU Executive, Unions NSW Executive, ANMF Federal Executive and Council and is a former Director and Deputy Chair of the HESTA Board (appointed in 2000; retiring in December 2016). Brett has dedicated his working life to the improvement of nurses and midwives pay and conditions, empowering them to deliver safe patient care.

With experience in child and adolescent, psychiatric intensive care and psychiatric emergency mental health inpatient settings Peter has experienced and managed challenging behaviours including aggression and violence. His current position is coordinating training for mental health services. This includes providing aggression management training to staff locally and across New South Wales and the A.C.T. He has also been involved in instructing trainers and instructors in aggression management techniques including de-escalation for ten years

Susan Harding is a veteran of the Health service industry having provided 25 years as an Emergency Nurse and more recently in a Nursing management role leading over 300 staff members in a fast paced, high acuity and frequently over-flowing Emergency Department. Whilst in this role Susan has focused on improving the retention of staff by implementing strong succession plans with a goal of achieving continual growth and innovation in nursing practices.
